New CSUSB Student Email

As you are welcomed back to another school year, you will be finding that CSUSB has switched to Google's Gmail for student email accounts. Previously, many students adjsuted their CSUSB email account settings to forward to a more frequently used email address. Google's Gmail allows for this same function, but you will have to alter the settings in your new account.

Disability Sports Festival

Hi everyone!  I hope you are all having a great summer!  Time is flying by, and it's almost September, so I thought I would send out an invitation to participate in CSUSB's Disability Sports Festival.  The festival is run by the Kinesiology Dept and will be on Saturday October 2, 2010.  The Disability Sports Festival is in it's 4th year now, and is free to all participants.  There is a goal of 600 participants with varying physical and mental disabilities this year, including an expected 100 veterans, so there is a great need for volunteers to help run the event.  Volunteers will be needed from 6am - 530pm.  Coyote Nurses have been especially asked to volunteer as first aid at each different site (rock wall, gym, track, football field, etc.) You can register by going to: www.volunteermatch.org and searching disability sports festival, you will then see a list of volunteer opportunities.  You can select first aid (morning or afternoon shifts are available).  Participating in the event will earn you hours toward a chord at graduation and you will have a great time helping others!  If you have any questions, feel free to email me!

Skills Day

From Professor diPretoro

Hope everyone is having a good summer.  I am planning on having a skills day for studentws wishing to refresh their memories on nursing skills.  I am specifically targeting those who will be in N220, N322 and N335 in the Fall but anyone is most certainly welcome.

It will be on Wednesday Sept 22nd from 0800-1200 and 1300-1600 with 8 stations available (assessment, foleys, GI stuff, Medications, IVs, central line care, wounds, trach/chest tubes/suctioning).  Of course this is dependant upon having enough faculty to have skills day.  Hopefully, things will work out.  Please watch your e-mails as the time for starting school draws nearer.  Depending on faculty response, there may have to be a particular schedule for the stations.

Health Fair - June 1st

Hi Everyone!

In addition to Faculty, Palm Desert, Lifestream, American Lung Association and many others, Joy Riddle,RN, Nurse Recruiter from Loma Linda will be joining us. Please make a point to stop by and make her and her staff feel welcome. As we know, many do not even have access to a healthcare provider without employment.

In addition to health education, research, and stress reduction,we will have a section of presenters that can help improve employment competitiveness such as the campus Career Development center, and hopefully a make-up artist to demonstrate/assist with a professional look for some fun( and interventions!).There will be some give-aways of health related items as well. The attendance sheet will be located at the Lifestream Bone Marrow Registry table.

Many clinical opportunities for service in different quarters are hoped for, so please spread the word, announce in your capstone classes, forward print and post the flyer(s)

(More Information to Come)!

This event is open to all students on campus and we really want a good turn out. We appreciate your help in serving the student community and getting the word out!

Student Forum-May 18th, 2010

Hello All!

For those of you who could not attend this month's student forum, here is a summary of what happened:

  1. Topic approval 1844, second Fady
  2. Specific questions from Dr. Stoner: Dr. Robinson will be teaching Nursing Research
  3. Status of ATI books:
    1. can we somehow study from one textbook instead of a textbook + ati?
                                               i.     NCLEX doesn’t get information from one textbook, it gets its info from multiple sources
ii.     NCLEX doesn’t focus on the nitty gritty details, but more on general concepts
iii.     Faculty has no mindset to change anything
iv.     Faculty will contact ATI and ATI has available updates for students
1.     Updates will be under RN review modules on home page
a.     Updates contain distracters
  1. Insufficient credits from Ginger(classmate)
    1. Issues with enrollment, doing a survey together to see student thoughts, research process to see other options to get credits
  2. Psych rotation and problems with Patton
    1. Patton is unfamiliar with quarter nursing schools, many students’ info got lost in the process, Lorena working with Patton to solve problem,
  3. ATI with Paula
    1. Focused review
                                               i.     Possibility of going “green”
1.     Online would be more up to date as NLCEX material changes
2.     Saves money
3.     eBooks would be available
ii.     Not specific and focused enough, if you miss one question they will ask you to review the whole chapter and not that specific section. Feedback not specific enough: ATI is basically telling us to reread the book
iii.     To access, go to My Results and Remediation and click on the Focused Review tab
1.     **Note: focused review is only available for 2007 A or B tests
  1. Discussing ideas and opportunities for clinical time outside of hospital
    1. Becoming a CNA after completing 1st quarter
    2. Missions and organizations that go abroad
                                               i.     Lighthouse of OC: trips every year to different countries, lots of clinical experiences
ii.     Hope for housing: local option, rotate quarters
    1. Obtaining LVN license
    2. Faculty looking into opportunities in community: could be integrated into curriculum or clinical hours
  1. Health Fair and dept. faculty role, and Dr. Stoner’s research
    1. Objective of Health Fair: help students learn about grant process, work with PDC, different dept. on campus, health education, employment, stress reduction
    2. LifeStream: training class for bone marrow, student health center: screen for STD and awareness, Indian health center: chemical dependency counseling and treatment for free, ombuds dept,
    3. Faculty: promote awareness, present research, offer extra credit, NURS399 credit,
  2. Possibility of establishing an organization for nursing alumni: potential for fundraising and improved hospital relationships
    1. Purpose of organization: we can have many events and we can rely on the alumni to contribute and share
  3. Need for a sign for the Nursing Dept?
  4. Photo copy of badge for lab access
    1. MUST HAVE ID TO GET IN

Meeting ends at 1940
