Hi Everyone,
A lot of students have contacted me about participating in Haiti relief efforts. I've done some research and here is my point of view:
Relief efforts are saturated given the limited resources on the ground. Nursing schools, often associated with medical schools or nurse practitioner programs are going, but bringing all their own supplies. It is possible to get there if you take commercial aircraft to the Domincian Republic and go by vehicle the rest of the way. At the present time, this does not seem a realistic project for us.
HOWEVER, during the summer, we would be more suited to go and work on community based projects. I there is interest a small group of us could go. The trip would be greatly expedited if funds could be identified to pay for the expenses of the people going. For me, I would need financial support for this trip but would be happy to arrange a trip if a group wants to go. I know many students are willing to pay their own way, which is generous. A trip of this type would be an incredible community service. After our master's accreditation visit in April I would have time to devote to organzing this trip.
In the meantime you may want to sign up through this web site for individual efforts to volunteer:

Others may have a different point of view, it is an important conversation for all of us to have.
